Barriers

A large school area, with available resources such as 2 sports fields, 3 computer labs, a library, as well as an audio-visual room.

Limited extra murals offered because of the lack of commitment from staff and learners

Committed principal and teachers, who are motivated and willing to assist the student

A high dropout rate with many learners leaving school in grade 9 – this was partially because learners placed little value on education and also lack the necessary support to facilitate different thinking

Feeding programme in the school, providing nourishment to 200 learners per day.

Teenage pregnancy was prevalent in the school (about 25 girls a year)

Verbal abuse was common in the home and school environment leads to learners acting out in the school environment.

The high school was looked down upon in the community, with the common operating assumption being that individuals from the school made nothing of their lives. This communicated to the learners that they would amount to nothing, limiting their views of their occupational choices and potential.
