Module 6: Occupational Health Management - Section 7: Principles of Management |
OHM 7.4: Managing a service with an emphasis on Project Management - Part 2 |
Project planning and management can be divided into 8 steps:
For the sake of clarity, these are defined below. Each step may be accessed as a separate document.
- Define the problem that needs to be addressed and identify the cause and effects of this problem.
- Determine the root definition: what is the expected goal of the project. Describe what would constitute a successful project - what would it look like?
- Develop a conceptual model of the minimum set of activities that need to occur in order to achieve the goal.
- Develop objectives and performance indicators from the conceptual model and a gap analysis comparing the model to the current situation.
- Develop a list of activities that need to occur in order to achieve the objectives.
- Determine the resources (inputs) required for each activity undertaken and develop a budget.
- Implement the project plan, monitoring the progress and making adjustments as required.
- Define the assumption/external factors on which you based your problem, objectives, activities and inputs. Identify the major risks involved in the project and how to strategise around these risks - contingency plans.
Note that this last Step takes us back again to the beginning of the planning cycle or Step 1 and gets us based on the results of our monitoring
and evaluation activities to assess the project plan anew based on information obtained from one complete cycle
