Step 2: Identifying the root definition/ goals of the project.

Once the problem has been defined the next step is to develop an idealised view of the situation as it should be in order to solve/ satisfy the need/ problem - in other words a description of what the situation would be like once the problem had been solved. This provides an end point which the project aims to achieve. This is known as the root definition. To get at the root definition it is often useful to ask the question: What would constitute success for this project? E.g. what would a successful HIV/AIDS programme in the workplace look like? Some people regard this as the goal of the project.

Using the Case Study presented, identify the root definition for the project. Identify the clients, actors, owners, worldview, and environmental constraints.
