Now inspect the head carefully. Look for anything unusual in the face:

  • Hair quality (texture, loss)
  • Abnormal facial hair
  • Symmetry
  • Rashes
  • Swelling/lumps
  • Colour
  • Bruising/Trauma
  • Dyskineasia

... and on the left and right sides of the head and neck.

Look carefully for temporal wasting, a useful sign of generalised muscle loss seen in ill patients.

Watch how the doctor inspects the face, the top of the head and the sides of the face carefully.

Notice, throughout the examination, how the clinician uses her hands to move the patient into the best position for each sign: her movements are firm and precise but always gentle.
