Mindfulness means being aware. Mindfulness helps us know what we are doing, when we are doing it. Often when we are doing something, we are thinking about something else and so are not aware of what we are doing. This is especially true when we are stressed.
Mindfulness exercises help us to train to be more aware of what we are thinking and feeling at any moment. This helps us to avoid getting lost in wandering, unhelpful thoughts. This is important, for example, when we are listening to someone else or trying to study.
In summary Mindfulness exercises, can help us to:
- relax the brain,
- feel calm,
- listen to what people are telling us,
- become less judgmental of ourselves and others,
- manage situations better, and
- notice what we are thinking and feeling without letting the feelings overwhelm us.
