The Department of Paediatrics & Training offers a number of postgraduate programmes.
The Child Health Unit, under which the PGDip in Community & General Paediatrics is managed, offers additional courses, including:
A Postgraduate Diploma in Paediatric Palliative Care. Keep your eyes open for a soon-to-be offered MPhil in Paediatric Palliative care!
MPhil in Maternal & Child Health (MCH): which is a Masters of Philosophy in a subspecialty. The MPhil in MCH is a masters by (1) course work and (2) a mini-dissertation (each component is equally weighted credit-wise). The programme aims to improve the health status of mothers and children in rural and peri-urban districts of Southern Africa, by developing the capacity of health personnel to plan, manage, implement and evaluate maternal and child health services. The programme is designed for those wanting to pursue a career in MCH management at the district and regional levels.
The course work consists of (1) an introduction to MCH, (2) health & development, (3) epidemiology, (4) maternal, child & adolescent health, (5) psychological context of MCH, (6) biostatistics, (7) research methods, (8) organisation & management of health services, (8) maternal, child & adolescent health priorities, (9) information, education & academic communication, followed by an MCH research project & dissertation.
