The Protocol

This is a simple protocol to ensure that obvious methodological issues are addressed and that the objective is clear. The intention is to improve the occupational health service and not to do research so we do not get ethics approval usually (i.e. it should be something that an occupational health service would do anyway to evaluate an issue and improve the service e.g. implementing a better housekeeping programme in an analytical lab and evaluating staff blood lead levels for decline after the changes).

You need to examine the detailed protocol for the research study of the health effects of manganese in a smelter provided below.

This is actually a full research project protocol and far beyond what is being required of you here in the 7-Step project stream.

Nevertheless you need to follow the structure of this protocol when you draft your own one.

The detail need not be too much but you should include something concise for all relevant headings to your measurement task in the next step.

You will need to cobble together the previous 3 sections with a concise version of your literature review built into the introduction section.

A very detailed example is provided below.  You do not have to go to these lengths when drafting your protocol.  Just follow the structure and produce as concise a version as possible.

AN EXAMPLE PROTOCOL FOR THE STUDY OF THE NERVOUS SYSTEM EFFECTS OF OCCUPATIONAL  MANGANESE EXPOSURE

 Evaluation:

Steps 1 through 6 will count  3  marks each (3x6  = 18), the final report 3 marks, and the final presentation oral 3 marks. This gives a total of 24 marks.

Marks   will be allocated as follows:

3 = Complete, 2 = Progress, 1 = Markedly incomplete, 0 = no hand-in on time
