Introduction

Speech Mapping is a hearing aid fitting verification method that is used to ensure hearing aids are programmed for a client’s unique hearing needs. It is a type of real ear measure where microphone probes are placed in the ear canal and are used to measure how a client is hearing amplified speech through their hearing aids. The Audiologist can then make adjustments to the gain that would allow your client to have the best possible access to speech.

Verification is something that can be difficult to understand when the theory is still new to you. I have found that other video content available on the internet to describe Speech Mapping is often pitched at a level intended for professionals who already know what the equipment does and how to use it.

These four videos aim to explain what we mean when we talk about hearing aid fitting verification; introduce the user to the equipment and all of its parts; show the user how to set up the equipment for Speech Mapping and finally how to do the RECD and Speech Mapping test. I am hoping that after watching these videos you will be able to use these tests easily to verify whether a hearing aid is or is not providing appropriate gain for a client and that you will be able to make adjustments to ensure the best fit for a variety of clients.
