Emeritus A/Prof Sean Kaliski worked in the Forensic Mental Health Service, based at Valkenburg, Lentegeur and Alexandra hospitals, from 1990 to 2021. In addition to running two parallel clinical services, namely the assessments of defendants referred by the courts (“observation cases”) and rehabilitation of those who were subsequently admitted as state patients, he trained undergraduate and postgraduate students. As there was a lack of standardised practices in the field, he edited a book, “Psycholegal Assessments in South Africa”, in 2006 to be used by members of multidisciplinary teams. His interests remain advancing training and education, ethics and assessment of violence. He currently assists in evaluating “observation cases” at Valkenberg Hospital.
