Digital Scholarship and Research Data ManagementClick to collapse

Digital Library Services (DLS) is here to help you take control of your data and make your research more manageable and efficient. We specialise in a variety of research data services that cover a wide range of needs for doing research in these digital times. Our services include support for digital scholarship, data curation (including digitisation and digital preservation), and geographic information systems (GIS).

We are transforming all of our in-person talks and slides into downloadable slide-decks (pdf), videos (mp4) and audio files (mp3). All of these will be placed on the Training component of our UCT Research Data Services project page on the OSF (Open Science Framework). In the meantime, here are links to the services and tools we currently support:

Plan and Design your Research

UCT DMP is our own data management plan creation tool built with DMProadmap. It assists you by asking questions and providing guidance related to your data and the research life cycle. The tool saves your plan and allows you to share it with your collaborators, funders and supervisors.

Visit DMPonline to create your account and start.

Manage and Store your Research

There are a number of UCT-sponsored solutions for managing and storing your data depending on your needs. All UCT users are given cloud storage on Google Drive as well as MS OneDrive, on top of ICTS storage (all accessible through UCT Single Sign-On).

Check out our helpful slides on good practices for managing, storing and preserving your data.

Collaborate with other Researchers

The Open Science Framework is a free, online platform that allows you to register your project, manage collaborators, and centralise data stored in different locations (integrations with Dropbox, Google Drive, OneDrive, etc). It provides unlimited, free storage and allows you to create versions of your project at different stages (‘forking’).

Login through the institutional link with your UCT Single Sign-On by clicking on the button below.

Share and Publish your Research

ZivaHub is UCT’s Institutional Data Repository, powered by Figshare for Institutions, an online platform for citing, sharing and discovering research data. It enables you to upload your data (20GB of free cloud storage) along with descriptive information. It links with your ORCiD profile and records views and downloads (‘Altmetrics’) of your published research data items.

Check out our quick guides to get started.

You can logon to ZivaHub using UCT Single Sign-On by clicking on the button below.

Geographic Information Systems

Because everything happens somewhere, we can capture the spatial location and use it to do spatial analysis and create maps. UCT Libraries has GIS consultants who can advise and assist you with such work. Our support is software-independent, but we do also provide access to ESRI desktop software (ArcGIS Desktop, ArcGIS Pro).

GIS Online Training Resources

UCT staff and postgraduate students may wish to make use of the ESRI Virtual Campus, where they can undertake online, self-paced web courses in a variety of GIS subjects: Esri Training | Your Location for Lifelong Learning.

The QGIS organisation also provide a Gentle Introduction to GIS and an online training manual.

GIS queries can be sent to uct-gis@uct.ac.za where one of the GIS consultants will endeavour to assist.

For assistance please email uct-gis@uct.ac.za or visit our website for more information.
