WhatsApp

WhatsApp is a free to download instant messenger application that is widely used to send multimedia messages such as images, videos, audios, documents along with simple text messages. The majority of students are familiar with this application tool as it is widely used and compatible with many different device types, including PCs.

WhatsApp can be used for discussion-based tutorials as it allows for the sharing of different types of content (video, audio, text, image). Content can be re-accessed or re-visited when needed, including when the device is off or outside of the coverage area (will load content when switched on or when connected).

Please note that Whatsapp is an external tool and consumes data.

Example:

  • Please refer to the How-to guide given above.

Group Settings:

  • You can create WhatsApp groups for students who belong to a particular tutorial group.
  • Group chats can be controlled through limiting admin rights.

Key points:

  • A great tool for instant communication.
  • It allows for the sharing of different types of content (video, audio, text, image).
  • Students can tap on important messages and click on the star icon to add them to their starred messages for quick access in the future.
  • It requires the open sharing of personal mobile numbers with the whole class (and not everyone will be comfortable with this).
