MS Teams

Microsoft Teams is a powerful collaboration tool available via Microsoft’s Office 365 suite. This application allows for the creation of a virtual space where you can discuss in real-time with your students during tutorials. It is available to all UCT staff and students.  MS Teams also has Whiteboard functionality which lets participants in a Teams meeting collaboratively share ideas on a shared digital canvas.

Please note that this platform consumes high bandwidth and requires that students have reliable internet connections and sufficient data, as well as the capacity to be present at the same time to join a virtual classroom. Please make sure that no student is left behind - if someone cannot connect to MS Teams, please consider other options such as Forums, Chat Rooms or the Q&A Tool, which are all integrated in Vula.

How-to Guide:

Example:

  • Please refer to the How-to Guide given in the above section.
  • Whiteboard function in MS Teams:
  • It is mostly similar to a Whiteboard which you use during face-to-face learning.
  • You can access Whiteboard via "Apps" in your UCT Outlook mailbox and share it during MS Teams meetings.
  • Whiteboard can also be accessed by clicking here.
  • You can type, draw or add sticky notes, as in the screenshot below.
  • You can also EXPORT the final image as a .PNG.

Group Settings:

  • Small groups can be created to share resources or to have a real-time discussion.
  • In the chat function, groups can be created which you can add students to.

Key points:

  • MS Teams allows you to communicate in real-time with your students.
  • You can set up small groups (or ‘channels’) to interact and share resources with.
  • Data is likely to be a serious barrier for some students.
  • A team with channels can be created which helps in managing different sessions.
  • Meetings can be recorded.
  • You can activate the subtitle function to allow for spoken words to show as written words on the screen (live and recorded sessions).
  • Files can easily be shared.
  • Screen share is possible, and there is whiteboard functionality.
