Introduction

The University of Cape Town General Surgery Textbook for Undergraduates was initially put together by Professor John Terblanche over 26 years ago.

It has gone through many updates since to keep pace with the ever changing surgical field. Most recently updated last year this book draws on contributions from many of the surgeons who have worked in, or are still working in the Department of General Surgery at the University of Cape Town.

This latest version has been put together by Dr Francois Malherbe under the tenure of Professor Delawir Kahn.

The text is not meant as an exhaustive resource on each and every aspect of general surgery but rather is aimed as a reference text for medical students in their last two years of training. Topics covered are the basic principles of surgical care, hepatobiliary, colorectal, vascular, upper GIT, paediatric, head and neck, breast and endocrine, and transplantation surgery.

The chapters are easy to read and cover most of the fundamental elements a graduating medical student would be expected to know about general surgical conditions.

This book is continually updated and all comments, criticisms and offers to write chapters are welcome. In putting together this text every effort has been made to ensure no copyright has been infringed. Please see the contact section if you have any query or complaint in these regards.
