Module 4: Lung Defences Against The Environment - Neutrophils and Local Immunoglobulins

Neutrophils and Local Immunoglobulins:

The lung is capable of a range of immunological responses, usually initiated by alveolar macrophages.

Alveolar macrophages may recruit neutrophils into the lung and alveoli, for example, in the case of pneumonia.

They may stimulate B cells to produce specific IgM or IgG immunoglobins, or via T H2 cells result in recruitment of eosinophils and IgE production. IgA production is a normal function of B cells in subepithelial lymphoid aggregates in the airways.
