EPI2-3: Measures of Incidence

OBJECTIVES

At the end of this session you should have have some knowledge of the meaning of incidence of disease in general terms.

MEASURES OF INCIDENCE:

Measures of incidence, on the other hand, describe the frequency of occurrence of new cases during a time period. It is useful to think of each individual as being in one of two "states": diseased or disease-free. In this framework the prevalence measure describes the proportion of the population that is in the diseased state at a specific time. The incidence measure describes the rate of flow from the disease-free state to the diseased state.
