Objectives

By the end of this session, you should be able to:

Discuss the lifecycle of HIV and where the different antiretroviral drug classes interrupt this cycle
Recognize patients (both adults and children) who are eligible for treatment and be able to select the optimal first line treatment for different patient scenarios
Prepare the patient for ART and monitor their response to therapy (Adherence will be covered in the TB-HIV co-infection course)
Recognize and manage common side effects and drug interactions of ARV drugs
Identify and manage drug resistance and treatment failure
Understand why patient-initiated treatment interruptions occur and how to re-initiate patients on ART
Manage patients with HIV-HBV co-infection, hepatic impairment, renal impairment or epilepsy (TB-HIV co-infection will be covered in the TB-HIV co-infection course)
Recognise and treat Immune Reconstitution Inflammatory Syndrome (IRIS)
