Lecture/discussion

1. Goals
   

   • To provide background information on what constitutes extra-judicial activities
   • To understand how these may affect perception of bias
   • To be able to raise pertinent questions when deciding on undertaking any extra-judicial activity
   • To examine personal activities and judge how they would stand up to scrutiny

3. Time required    60 minutes

4. Materials
   

   • Main cases referred to: SACCAWU, Pinochet, R v Milne and Erleigh, S v Van Heerden en ander sake.
   • Reading: Extra-judicial activities (this may also be given to participants for their own information)
   • Outline of lecture for trainer
   • Overhead transparencies (1 to 8)

5. Process
   

   1. Give the lecture on the subject of extra-judicial activities using the notes in the Reading (Section 3) to prepare. The Lecture Outline suggests the key topics that should be handled, and there are overhead transparencies (OHT 1 to 9) to illustrate some of the key points.

   2. At relevant points in the lecture, get the participants to discuss their own personal involvements in extra-judicial activities and ask them for their comments and queries for discussion in the group.
