  5. Process

    1. Welcome participants to the course.

    2. Using the lecture outline, with OHTs 1 to 4B, give them the basic background, objectives and structure for the course as a whole. Fill in details from the readings and the introductory chapter for trainers. OHT 1 is a model framework for examining ethics for magistrates which shows how the key aspects of the course are related. Distribute a copy of this model to participants as Handout 1.

    3. Be prepared to answer any questions that may arise.

    4. Adapt the information you give on course details according to the particular programme that you have planned and the modules that you will present.

    5. Tell them about the sort of activities that will be experienced: questionnaires, lectures, role-plays, discussion on scenarios, case studies and reflection. Emphasise that the course is to be participative, and that you encourage them to share ideas and experiences from their personal and professional lives as much as possible. Emphasise as well that much of their learning will come from their peers.

    6. Tell them that the basis of all their understanding of values and ethics can only be worthwhile if they understand the role that each of their personal values plays in their lives. For this realisation, they need to develop a high level of self-awareness. This first module, therefore, will cover areas of self-awareness in its activities.

    7. Use this first activity as an opportunity to set the tone for a positive learning experience. Appendix 2 will remind you of ways of doing this. Most importantly, you should be organised, friendly, enthusiastic and confident.
