- A lot can be done for employees infected with HIV.
- Benefits of active intervention far outweigh the costs.
BACKGROUND TO EXPERIENCE IN HIV:
- Khayelitsha primary care services in public sector with MSF and UCT support.
- Three services (one of which is pilot project integrating HIV and TB services).
- 3 000 regular patients (6 000 on books).
- 1 000 on ART.
- Largely see WHO stage 3 and 4.
WHAT SHOULD BE DONE FOR RECENTLY DIAGNOSED HIV-INFECTED PATIENT?
The list below summarises the actions that can be taken:
- Staging.
- CD4 cell count.
- HIV RNA level or viral load.
- Prevention and treatment.
- Psychosocial support.
- Counselling on sexual behaviour.
