Module 4: Skin Physiology - Skin Protective Function

SKIN PROTECTIVE FUNCTION:

The skin itself has a metabolic function. The epidermis is responsible for the synthesis of hormones and vitamins, such as, vitamin D. The apocrine, eccrine and sebaceous glands are responsible for releasing secretions which contribute to the barrier function of the skin, the acid pH mantel, act as pheromones and are responsible for body odour.
