To advance human rights and health for all, Health Professionals have a role and responsibility to promote the mental, physical and social well-being of the Lesbian, Gay, Transgender, Bisexual and Intersex community (LGBTI) who have specific and diverse health needs. Non-discrimination is a key pillar in terms of healthcare provision as indicated by the Psychological Society of South Africa's practice guidelines and position statement as well as the Victim Empowerment National framework.
LGBTI is one of the many umbrella acronyms used as a collective to promote advocacy towards the health and well-being of sexual and gender minorities (SGMs).
This population group is frequently exposed to human rights violations due to stigma and marginalization. Harmful practices resulting from discrimination and exclusion have concerning health outcomes. Individuals face negative stereotyping exacerbated by ignorance and disrespect.
