Disparities in the health status of different countries are exemplified when related to disability and development issues.

For instance health facilities and services for mental health concerns are limited especially in developing countries, despite their prevalence. The right to vote is fundamental yet many people with disabilities are denied this opportunity to express their civic choice. It was only in the 2011 local government elections that the South African Independent Electorate Commission (IEC) introduced tactile voting templates for people with visual disabilities, as explained by the Southern African NGO Network (SANGONeT) electronic newsletter, Sangonet Pulse.
