Module 4: Lung Defences Against The Environment - The Cough Reflex

The Cough Reflex:

Cough is a complex reflex, with inputs from receptors widely scattered through what were embryonal foregut structures.

The objective of a cough is the forcible expulsion of air at high flow. This creates shear forces in the mucous layer leading to separation and expulsion of the gel layer.
