EPI.3-1: MEASURES OF EFFECT OR MEASURES OF COMPARISON OF DISEASE OCCURRENCE
 

SESSION OBJECTIVE

At the end of this session you should understand the meaning of the word "effect" as distinct from a health outcome, how measures of effect are based on measures of occurrence, and how and when effect measures are calculated.

In comparisons of disease occurrence, the occurrence of disease is measured and compared between two groups. Typically one of these groups is exposed to some determinant of disease while the other is not.

The occurence of a disease is measured in three different ways:
