Lecture/discussion with exercises

1. Goals
   

   • To provide background information on the core concepts of appropriate behaviour for the magistrate in court
   • To link these concepts to the principle of seeing that justice is done
   • To create an understanding of the importance of courtroom conduct in influencing the public perception of the judiciary

4. Materials
   

   • Reading: Conduct in court (these notes may also be given to participants for their own information)
   • Outline of lecture for trainer
   • Overhead transparencies (1 to 8)
   • Lecture exercise sheet for trainer
   • Flipchart paper and markers

5. Process
   

   1. Give the lecture on the subject of Conduct in court using the notes in the Reading (Section 3) to prepare. The Lecture Outline suggests the key topics that should be handled, and there are overhead transparencies (OHT 1 to 8) to illustrate some of the key points.

   2. At relevant points in the lecture, signalled by an exercise number on the lecture outline, refer to the lecture exercise sheet for trainer where you will find corresponding discussion points, questions or exercises, which will help to illustrate the points being made.
      (The exercises take up 70 minutes in total)
